We shot the "Fillmore Sequence" late into the night at Bill Graham's Fillmore East in the East Village. Most of the scene featured Danny Landau in drag, on stage, and surrounded by ten totally nude male and female actors.
It grew later and later as we struggled to complete the dream sequence. Then about 4 o'clock in the morning we all heard the stage door open with a tremendous crash.
It was Moby Grape. The band had come in to leave their instruments for a concert on the following night. They just stood there looking on incredulously. Moby Grape must have seen a lot of strange things in their day, but apparently nothing had prepared them for this.
"What are all these naked people doing here?", one band member stammered. "And who's that guy in drag anyway?", asked another. We explained that we were shooting a movie, and that seemed to satisfy them. A number of us attended the concert the next evening, and it was a really good show.
