Shooting a movie is a very slow business. The night we were shooting the "Dream Sequence", things seemed to drag on and on. Setting up shots, lighting them and then deciding on camera angles takes a really long time. Danny Landau, who played the lead in this sequence, began to get very bored waiting around. About 2 AM he wandered off.
The truth is nobody noticed until he returned about an hour later, when he came waltzing into the auditorium in full drag. He was wearing a full-length black sequined dress, bright red spike high heels, and a long feather boa draped around his shoulders.
I decided it would be perfect for a mental breakdown theme. So I changed the script and we went with it.
After the shoot I asked him where he got the outfit at 2:30 in the morning. He replied that he borrowed them from his good friend Lily who lived in a tenement not far from the Fillmore.
Lily turned out to be Lily Tomlin, who a few years later would become very famous on the hit network TV series Laugh-In.
